After Work

In 1958, Hannah Arendt predicted a society without work. After Work explores this current reality and the quest for meaning in economies such as Italy, the USA, South Korea and Kuwait. 

SYNOPSIS

In 1958, philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote in Condition of Modern Man: "What we have before us is the prospect of a society of workers without work, i.e. deprived of the only activity left to them. Nothing worse can be imagined." After Work - a highly necessary and contemporary update of Arendt's warning - comes at just the right time. How can we give meaning to our lives if we find ourselves deprived of what has long been its main content, namely work? Focusing on relatively affluent economies such as Italy, the USA, South Korea and Kuwait, the film functions as a foretaste of a conundrum that could soon become increasingly prevalent, with the emergence of artificial intelligence and automation.

Erik Gandini is an Italian-Swedish film director, writer, and producer and professor of documentary film at Stockholm University of the Arts. He has produced and directed numerous internationally acclaimed documentaries including Surplus – Terrorized into Being Consumers which won the Main Prize at IDFA 2003 and was screened at over 70 festivals around the world. Videocracy was shown at the Venice Film Festival, Toronto IFF, IDFA in 2009 and was nominated for a DOX:AWARD at CPH:DOX. In 2015, The Swedish Theory of Love premiered at the Stockholm International Film Festival and went on a successful international festival tour (CPH:DOX, IDFA) and was theatrically released in many territories. He produced The Raft by Marcus Lindeen which won numerous international awards, e.g. the main competition at CPH:DOX in 2018.
