Introduction
When Funambules Médias was founded in 2008, it focused on three main areas: video production, training, and the screening of documentary films. In 2010, the grand adventure of Le Cinéma sous les étoiles began. Starting with modest beginnings at Parc Laurier, the event quickly grew into a major festival of social and political documentary films. Le Cinéma sous les étoiles is now a pioneer in outdoor screenings and one of the largest events of its kind.
More than just a screening platform, Le Cinéma sous les étoiles is a space for public debate, where the political issues of our time are made accessible. Designed as a community-centered event, its decentralized structure brings screenings directly to neighborhood parks in about ten boroughs across Montreal. Collaborating with local organizations and various social and environmental movements, the gatherings allow citizens to reclaim public spaces and build solidarity within the community. By addressing a broad audience with a focus on social change, Le Cinéma sous les étoiles democratizes documentary cinema, once reserved for cinephiles, fostering connections between filmmakers and the public.
Our program highlights documentaries tackling social, political, and environmental issues, with a focus on both local and international current events. It strives to balance art and social engagement, showcasing films that excel both in cinematic quality and thematic strength.
These screenings are more than just showings: they are accompanied by lively discussions with filmmakers and experts on the issues addressed. These discussions encourage critical thinking and enrich public discourse.
Today, this 15th edition presents about fifty citizen-driven, friendly, and free screenings across more than 20 parks and outdoor venues in Montreal. These community events in public spaces give cinephiles and newcomers alike access to a curated selection of local and international works, including short and feature-length documentaries.
Over time, Le Cinéma sous les étoiles de Funambules Médias has become a staple of Montreal summers, attracting over 10,000 attendees annually.
