Sleepless Birds

Industrial light in Bretagne, its environmental impacts on nature and time, and it raises philosophical questions about human control.

SYNOPSIS

At the border between science-fiction and documentary, Sleepless Birds tracks the rise of artificially-lit, industrial greenhouses in the French region of Bretagne. The film presents the environmental impact of grow lights on biodiversity, as well as on our rhythm and perception of time. In examining the case of agricultural light pollution, the film also raises questions about the unintended consequences of human attempts to overpower nature and control the elements.

SEE COMPLETE PROFILE

Dana Mevaler is a multi-disciplinary artist who uses creative practices as research tools. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in China, Germany, and New York. Artistic research — the use of creative methods as tools — is her means to uncover a sense of self. She spends her time toying with boundaries, using artistic practice to work through complex definitions. Her projects engage with scientific and technological theories and the ways in which they change our idea of individuality. Whether in video or installation, borrowing from aquaculture or oenology, her projects toy with the boundaries that delineate beings. She works guided by three principles: connection, evolution, and participation.
