Northern Comfort: A Drive Around Town

A short documentary about life in Northern Quebec and the differences in living conditions between the Cree and local non-natives. A story about how being Métis and trilingual in northern communities raises some questions about the social dynamics between the Cree and non-natives living in Chisasibi. 

SYNOPSIS

A short documentary about life in Northern Quebec and the differences in living conditions between the Cree and local non-natives. A story about how being Métis and trilingual in northern communities raises some questions about the social dynamics between the Cree and non-Natives living in Chisasibi. The film discusses conversations with non-natives about the 3Ms of the North (misfits, missionaries and money makers) and the role that white fragility, white space and the white savior complex play.

Melanie Lameboy is a Cree from Chisasibi, Quebec and enjoys making short films. Spending time at home in the north with her family is a priority for her. She enjoys the creativity that filmmaking provides and uses her creativity to raise awareness for causes that she feels need to be brought to light. She has always been passionate about documentary filmmaking as a way to speak and share her truth. Melanie has made two films with Wapikoni; the first being "Every Dog Has a Story" which talks about stray dogs in her community and Northern Comfort: "A Drive Around Town". Melanie has taken the opportunity to enroll in online documentary filmmaking courses and will continue to create short films.
