Deep Rising

Punctuated by breathtaking images of deep-sea organisms, Deep Rising traces several decades of manipulations benefiting companies aiming for deep-sea mining extraction.

SYNOPSIS

Deep Rising delves into one of the most obscure industrial exploits of our century: deep-sea mining. In the name of ecological transition and against a backdrop of geopolitical crisis, unscrupulous companies are racing to secure rights to extract marine nodules. Formed over millions of years and rich in rare metals essential for battery production, these resources lie in a fragile ecosystem several kilometers below the surface. Directed by Nyon-based filmmaker Matthieu Rytz, Deep Rising traces decades of manipulations benefiting greedy corporations, interspersed with breathtaking images of deep-sea organisms. From the Atacama Desert to Papua New Guinea, and through the City and Shenzhen, the film exposes the industrial sector's hypocrisy in the face of the climate crisis, the illusory promises of electrification, and the privatization of this common heritage of humanity. It confronts us with an ethical and philosophical dilemma: Can we sacrifice the last ecosystem untouched by human presence in the name of our survival?
