CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: DOCUMENTARY SHORTS
CINÉMA SOUS LES ÉTOILES 2019

In 2019 Le Cinéma sous les étoiles of Funambules Médias is celebrating its 10th birthday! This year we will hold an extended Documentary Shorts competition for which we are excited to launch a new Call for Submissions. The application period will be open until March 29, 2019, applications are free of charge.

Cinéma sous les étoiles is a festival that each year presents over 70 documentaries on crucial and increasingly worrying social, political, and environmental issues, for free, in the parks of Montréal.

Our screenings are not only the opportunity to appreciate a documentary short in the open air, they also bring together members of the community to discuss and reflect together. They offer a space for citizens to exchange ideas, engage in open discussions on local and international political issues, and discover the exceptional work of documentary makers from here and abroad.

CALLING FOR SHORTS BRINGING ART AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT TOGETHER

In continuity with our previous editions, we are looking for documentaries of a strong social and political nature, which address the major themes of the festival: environment, democracy, colonialism, society and economy. We will privilege films that are critical of national and international issues, and focused on social justice and inclusion.

To make the cut, your film will have to have a strong point-of-view, but we will pay special attention to the aesthetic and cinematographic quality of the documentaries submitted. We believe in the strength of the balance between art and social engagement.

All documentary shorts submitted will be reviewed by our selection committee. Approximately 30 documentaries will be selected.

5 AWARDS TO BE WON

The selected documentaries will be divided into 3 categories for the showings: Québec Independent programming, national programming, and international programming. In total, five awards will be given to works that truly stand out, by our panel of judges composed of a cinematographer, an intellectual, and a militant.

Impact Award: Awarded under the Québec Independent programming category to the documentary that had the most compelling point of view,

Cinematographic Award: Awarded under the Québec Independent programming category to the documentary that had the best artistic and photographic quality,

Best New Talent Award: Awarded under the Québec Independent programming category awarded to a first film of great quality.

Best National Documentary Short Award, and

Best International Documentary Short Award.

Thanks to its collaborations with SPIRA, the National Film Board of Canada (ONF-NFB), SLA coop, Beebop Studios and Coop l’Argot, Cinéma sous les étoiles will be able to support emerging filmmakers by awarding nearly 20 000 $ in production, post-production and subtitling services to our three winners in the Québec Independent programming category and one in the national category.
